Just a few kilometers from Montreal, Repentigny, the most urban of the small suburbs, invites you to discover its surroundings. On the banks of the St. Lawrence and L'Assomption rivers, it's the perfect place to soak up culture and sunshine. Culture, the great outdoors and history share the stage in this urban destination that's well worth the detour.
Here's an itinerary to discover the urban destination of Repentigny, well worth a few days' stopover this summer.
DAY 1
On your first day of summer in Repentigny, you'll want to stop at the Espace culturel, right in the center of town. On one side is the Théâtre Alphonse-Desjardins and on the other the Centre d'art Diane-Dufresne. These cultural institutions are surrounded by Allée des Artistes, Allée de la Création, and Passage de l’Imaginaire. With such creative and inspiring street names, you really feel like you’re right in the heart of the arts district.
After touring the exhibitions, we recommend taking a leisurely stroll through the Cultural Center and enjoying the relaxing spaces that have been created on the grounds. This is also the venue for the free Rose Gazon festival, held in August, where you can admire dazzling digital artworks and extravagant live performances, in addition to musical performances.
DAY 2
Since one day isn’t enough to see everything downtown Repentigny has to offer, we suggest coming back to enjoy its green spaces along the river. Île-Lebel Park is a true oasis right in the heart of the city. Along the St. Lawrence River, we stop at this haven of peace and explore its 3 km of walking trails. Many people come here to observe a wide variety of birds and ducks. It’s the perfect spot for a picnic. There’s also a playground with play equipment for children right near the entrance.
A little further down Notre-Dame Street, you’ll come across Saint-Laurent Park. This urban beach invites you to relax with its sandy areas, lounge chairs, and umbrellas. Misting systems provide a refreshing cool-down, though swimming is prohibited.
The Repentigny Water Sports Center also lets you explore Île Annexe and enjoy activities offered all summer long: kayaking, rabaska, stand-up paddleboarding, volleyball, pétanque, iron game, two disc golf holes, axe throwing, badminton, Finnish skittles, giant Tetris, spinning ball, fishing area, and relaxation zone are all available to you on an all-inclusive basis on an island powered entirely by solar energy.
It is also very close to this beach that the Heritage Cruise on the St. Lawrence River departs. Board the shuttle with a certified guide and learn more about the history of the city of Repentigny, the resort era, the surrounding islands, and the main attractions in the area.
DAY 3
The Chemin du Roy, a scenic and historic route that crosses the Lanaudière region, connecting Québec City to Montréal, runs through the city of Repentigny along its main thoroughfare, Notre-Dame Street. Historical sites and heritage landmarks, such as mills and churches, line this route, which visitors seeking a glimpse of history will enjoy exploring. Cyclists will enjoy riding along the Chemin du Roy by the river, or may prefer to take the urban bike circuit, which covers about 60 kilometers of the surrounding area starting from Repentigny. It’s a wonderful way to wrap up this tour of the Repentigny area and appreciate the rich history and culture of this urban destination.
If it rains or you’re in the mood for some retail therapy, treat yourself to a bit of shopping at the Galeries Rive-Nord.
