Why visit Marc Séguin’s exhibition Sur le fil rouge? Here’s a recap of our experience at the Diane-Dufresne Art Center

June 17, 2026

If you're looking for things to do in Repentigny or a cultural activity to check out this summer in Lanaudière, the exhibition Sur le fil rouge is definitely worth your attention. We visited this major retrospective dedicated to Marc Séguin at the Centre d'art Diane-Dufresne, and here's our account of the visit.

AN IMMERSION INTO THE WORLD OF MARC SÉGUIN

During our visit to the Centre d’art Diane-Dufresne (CAAD), we discovered Sur le fil rouge, a major exhibition dedicated to Marc Séguin, one of the most important figures in contemporary Quebec art. Presented as part of the CADD’s 10th anniversary, the exhibition brings together nearly 50 paintings spanning several decades of his career. Some works are rarely shown to the public, while another is being exhibited for the very first time.

Upon our arrival, we were struck by the grandeur of several canvases. Some occupy a prominent place in the space and immediately catch the eye. Beyond their size, it was above all the textures, the layering of materials, and the details that made us want to take the time to observe each work.

AN EXHIBIT DESIGN THAT GUIDES US THROUGH THE VISIT

One of the elements that made the biggest impression on us was the exhibit design conceived for the exhibition. A red line runs through the exhibition spaces and influences the way we move through the rooms. We find ourselves stopping, skirting around certain areas, or viewing the works from different angles.

This simple visual detail brings coherence to the exhibition route and creates a common thread linking the various works on display. It also helps us better grasp the reflections and tensions that run through the artist’s work.

WORKS THAT INVITE REFLECTION

Throughout the tour, several works catch our attention not only for their visual impact but also for the questions they raise. Marc Séguin addresses various social issues and uses art as a space for critical reflection on the world around us.

A room dedicated to female figures is also worth a closer look. There, we discover famous and anonymous women who have inspired the artist over the years. This section brings a particularly human dimension to the exhibition and helps us better understand certain influences present in his work.

One aspect we particularly appreciated is the freedom of interpretation the exhibition offers. Each visitor can see something different depending on their life experiences, personal references, or simply their state of mind at the moment. It’s the kind of exhibition that sparks discussions and keeps us thinking long after we’ve left the galleries.

A CULTURAL OUTING TO COMBINE WITH THE REPENTIGNY CULTURAL CENTER

The visit doesn’t end at the doors of the Diane-Dufresne Art Center. Located in the heart of the Repentigny Cultural Center, the area features several venues and activities that allow you to extend the experience.

Before or after your visit, you can enjoy the outdoor spaces, attend cultural events, explore other activities offered by the Center, or simply take the time to stroll through this neighborhood dedicated to the arts and culture. It’s a wonderful way to turn a simple visit to an exhibition into a true cultural outing.
